Desk DIY – Tips

Building your own corner desk is a great way to save yourself some money and end up with the perfect size, style, and shape of desk that you need for your office.  Before you head into the project, though, you are going to want to think about a few tips that can help you out along the way.  Take a look at some of the tips that we’ve outlined for you below to help ensure that your next corner desk project goes along as smoothly as possible.

Tip #1: Plan Out The Desk Project Properly – In order to make sure that the desk ends up exactly how you want it, you are going to need to make sure that you have a set of detailed plans laid out.  Take the time to measure the space where you are going to install the desk and then lay out some very specific, detailed drawings about the width, height, and depth of different sections.

Tip #2: Make Sure You’ve Got All The Tools You’ll Need – Getting deep into the project only to find out that you are missing a few tools is a bad way to keep up your momentum and get the desk completed.  Go over the different steps for building the desk and make sure that you are going to have all of the tools before you start digging into it.  These tools range from basic hand tools to a new blade on the saw that you will be using to cut the materials.

Tip #3: Keep Your Finishing Products Handy – You are going to need a few different finishing products available for the times when you have completed the construction of the desk.  Sanding paper and filler putty is great for completing the look for your desk.  You can remove the burrs with the sanding paper and fill up any nail and screw holes with the putty.  You will also want to make sure that you have a can of stain available to complete the look of your new corner desk.

Tip #4: Use High Quality Plywood And Trim – Using low quality materials may be a great way to save money on the construction of the desk but it is going to actually cost you more money over the long run.  Take the time up front, and the added expense to purchase high quality furniture grade plywood, and trim pieces.

Tip #5: Take Your Time During The Cutting And Construction – If you rush through the project you are going to end up with a shoddy constructed desk.  Because of this you are going to want to make sure that you take your time during the cutting and construction portion of building your desk.
